Scope
Kitchen design, flat-front walnut cabinetry, marble island, bronze hardware, installation
A new build on the Surrey Hills presented the opposite problem to most commissions — too much space, too little character. Flat-front walnut cabinetry in a warm mid-tone, a single slab of Statuario marble for the island, and brushed bronze hardware introduced material warmth without sacrificing the clean geometry the architecture demanded.
The walnut was fumed for three weeks before veneering — a process that deepens the natural tannins and gives the timber an age it would otherwise take thirty years to acquire. The Statuario marble was selected for its distinctive bold grey veining; the slab was cut to maximise the dramatic movement across the island face. Floor-to-ceiling glazing overlooks the garden; the kitchen is designed to be read against that view.

"The fumed walnut was the decision that made the whole room. It gave the house the character the architect could not."
